Italian has so-called elision – the phenomenon of the final vowel of the first word falling out if the next word begins with a vowel or silent h. Its standard form is based on the Tuscan dialect. The letters K, Y, W, X, J do not appear in the language, and all words end in a vowel: i, a, e, o, u. Apart from Italy, it is also an official language in the Vatican, San Marino, and Switzerland. Most terms used in music are derived from Italian, e.g. solo.
