Also known as Bahasa Indonesia. Indonesian has numerous borrowings from other languages, including Sanskrit, Arabic and Persian. Literary Indonesian is like the Malay language spoken in Malaysia or Singapore. Some differences can be observed in vocabulary and pronunciation, especially as part of colloquial and regional forms. Indonesian is deprived of many grammatical categories’ characteristic for European languages, which does not make it an easy language to learn. Linguistic diglossia, reduplication and proper expression of the verb can make communication complicated.
