The Devanagari script is used to transcribe the Hindi language. It is the official language of the Indian state administration and the primary language at schools. It belongs to the family of the Indo-European languages and is spoken by as many as 180 million people, making it the fourth most widely spoken language in the world (after Chinese, English, and Spanish). It is also spoken by many people in Nepal. Along with Urdu, Hindi forms two types of literary language called Hindustani.
