Is one of the Balkan languages; for the purpose of its writing, an adapted form of the Latin alphabet is used, enriched with additional diacritical marks. The language is characterised by 3 dialects: Chakavian, Kajkavian and Shtokavian; the latter one being the most popular and standardised. The modern Croatian language dates back to the independence of Croatia in 1991 and, apart from Croatian, it also appears as a minority language in Serbia, Montenegro and other nearby countries.
