It belongs to the group of South Slavic languages and it is the official language in North Macedonia. In Bulgaria, this language is the subject of political controversy, as it is considered only a dialect of Bulgarian or its regional norm. There is a fixed accent in Macedonian, which falls on the third syllable from the end of a word. Macedonian is distinguished by an elaborate system of tenses, inherited from the Proto-Slavic language.
